P1's Hunting

and all that implies

Archery

As an avid hunter, I have had a need to increase the difficulty to harvest game. Archery has done exactly that. I have only been shooting a bow for a few years, and have yet to harvest a buck with my bow. I have taken 2 does total; 1 in 2004 and 1 in 2005, however I got nothing in 2006. I have done some revamping of my feeder pens and stands in order to increase my chances. I also placed my tripod lower inside the branches of the tree in order to give me more of a 3D feel of break up. As you can see from the pictures below, the stand is set at the right height to give me the thickness of the main branches, but yet the movement of the leaves.

I shoot a very small but inexpensive bow. It's the PSE Spyder, and it's on the border of being a youth bow. I shoot a Red head carbon express 250 arrow. It's 9 grains per inch and has a straightness factor of +/- .003. I shoot the Cabela's fixed head 100 grain hunting tip. With the bow set at 56 pounds, and my draw length at 27" I shoot 225 fps. I know it's not super fast as all those $1000 bows, but at $199 for the bow, it gets the job done very well. At the moment I have a Cobra 3 pin sight that has a build in LED light on the fiber coils. I have my pins set at 20, 30 and 40 yards. my groups are not awesome, but very suitable for hunting. at 30 yards, I am shooting 5 arrow groups at  3" - 4"  consistently. Occasionally, I ctoss in a nice 2" group.

I have a Cabela's ultra light Ghillie suit I purchased last year. The different colors and the 3D look provides the perfect camouflage pattern I need for the set up I am using. It only weighs about 5 pounds and it's very big and bulky. It's took some trimming on the arms to ensure that the strips of material did not get caught up in the bow while shooting. I also trimmed all the hanging material in front of my eyes as this was a distraction when trying to spot game.

The feeder pen was designed with having extra room so that the deer did not feel cooped up. We decided to do it right. We came in and cut down the tree's and we dug out the cactus. Then we took the 4foot disc we bought 2 years ago, and broke up the ground real nice.  This allowed us to start with a nice clean flat surface to work with. It also set the stage if we want to try to plant some form of food plot. We really did not have the time to get anything planted this year. We built the pen 50' x 50'. I have heard my friend George tell me that the big bucks hesitate to go into a small pen. With the camera being up for just 1 month now, it's obvious that he was right. I have pictures of more bucks at one time than ever before. If you look close at one of the pictures below, you can see 2 bucks fighting just outside the back fence of the new feeder pen.
